Dear Experts,

I'm new to SAP MM and was earlier working on Oracle ERP. As a team member, it's entrusted upon me to decide whether the material coding has to be numeric or alphanumeric. Client is insisting on "Alphanumeric" where as I perfer "Numeric" coding methodology.

You all, out of your experience with SAP and the issues related with numeric and alphanumeric system, kindly list out the PROs & CONs of both the systems. Also indicate your preference out of the both options.

Enjoy SAP

Hi

There are no distict benefits of either of the one .It entirely depends on Business requirements and the Usabilty. In alphanumeric numbers internal number ranges cannot be defined I.e Numbers have to be provided externally by the user

Where as in Numberic numbers you can define Internal numbers where system provides the number in defined sequence

Thanks all,

Finally our team has zeroed upon having "Alphanumeric System" external generation of codes. Client will have an experienced material code creater who will be doing this job. The conclusion was take in this way because, the client has four level hierarchy of material in material management. ie Mat.type, Material Group, Mat. Sub Group and finally Material. This they want to fulfill using alphanumeric coding method and also for recognizing material and its respective group by looking at the mat code. t

Thanks once again to all of you.

Hi

As suggested you can go wiht alphanumeric ways of numbering. it always helps to represent different stages/processes or any other details in the code itself making it simple for the user to understand what the material is. There are certain benefits of using interanal numbers also for example generating reports using the ranges instead of entering individually. But ultimately teh usage factor counts how it has to be.

Hi,

See if you have a Rubber Material you can use it As RUB01 but you need to be so clarified for your users so that they cannot use it anywhere it must be in a limit way.

in SAP we can maintain different no. range for Different material types. So that your usage problem might get solve with different no. ranges. like for RAW material of Rubber you can maintain it as per your requirement but for Semifinisahed goods we can maintain as per stages of that material in production..

same for all types as per the requirements and it will be more useful in Displaying the data to Client.

try your end.

If you want to use Numeric then it would be internal number range, and system will automatically proposes the number.

and there will be jumping of numbers incase you won't save the Material..

for Alpha numeric you should check the previous number , before creating a New Material..

and there will not be any jumping of Material Numbers..

But by using the Alpha numeric number, you can have the feasibility to match the material definition / attributes

Dear,

If at all client is asking Alphanumeric COde, then there is no issue in providing Alphanumeric codes.

If you maintain Alphanumeric codes for material, then also Material codes will be Unique in the system. and if you maintain Numeric codes for material, then also Material Numeric codes will be Unique in the system.
