Hello Anubhav,

From your statement I can figure out that the category in their existing system can be termed as material type & sub category can be mapped as material group in SAP, however some more info would be needed to suggest you better options.

Do refer following informative threads on the subject as well as suggest you to go through SCN & SAP help for more info on this.

Hi Mangesh

Sorry for late reply...

I am migrating data from oracle to SAP.

there are 20 categories and each have multiple sub category.

when we create material , we assign 1 category and 1 sub category to each material.

now my question is that how we will map this in SAP...

supppose if i consider categories as a material group then how we will map sub categories.

Thanks

Anubhav

It is part of your project work to identify where this information could be stored in SAP.

You can only get those generic answers that you already got if you cannot explain clearly what this category and sub category represents in your Oracle system.

If you would explain in detail e.g. with an example what info you have there in Oracle and what you exactly do with it, then there might be a chance that you can get a straight answer.

Hi Jurgen.

While create material in oracle system we assign category e.g.

Category : Chemical Product, Metal , Packing, Pipe Fitting, Electrical Material etc.

Sub Category : below are the example of sub category

F: Additive

F: Adsorbent

F: Catalyst

F: Fire Chemical

F: Waste Water Treatment Chem.

F:Lubrication oil

F:Sealant

F:Water Treatment Chemical

Unspecified

J: Needle Valve

J: Nipple

J: Nozzle

J: Plug

J: Plug Valve

J: Pressure Safety Valve

J: Reducers

J: SPECTACLE BLIND

J: Siphon Tube

J: Slip On Flange

J: Smooth Bend

J: Sockolet

J: Steam

J: Steam Trap

J: Strainer

So what should i do in this case. where these will be fix in SAP

several options as already mentioned. you can make the category a material type and the sub category a material group.  you could use the product hierarchy for this as well.

and of course material classification could even cover this 1:1

Hi Anubhav,

Isn't your sub category Materials? Cant you create it as Material Master?

SAP provides a material group hierarchy solution in IS-Retail. Have a look at this help.sap link:

HI,

in SAP you have first material type (ex, finished good, raw material, operating supply, tools etc.) and material group you can use for your purpose. If this will not fullfill your requirement then you can create class and use characteristic .
