Free Text Material

Hello ,

I am using SAP S4 Hana 1709 Version . I wanted to use free text Material. As the Material can be used again and again changing the text name .

Wanted to know which Material type we can use and how we can setup this requirement ?

I am not sure that I understand what you meant by free text material - is this about text items (where you do not enter a material code at all) or about an item with a material code where you modify the description in the sales document?

In the first case you do not have a material number, so the question about material type is irrelevant, you just type some text that you use later for reporting or for printing. There is nothing special in terms of configuration, in standard you have item category TATX for order type OR.

In the second case you have a material code and you change the description either via CMIR or by typing manually the desired description at order creation.

The choice of material type depends on your process. Usually you modify the descriptions directly in the sales order when this is a service material (not relevant for inventory). This means DIEN or SERV in standard systems. Typically you use TAD item category, it is possible also to configure delivery-related billing (depending on the use case).

If this is about sales of materials relevant for inventory management - usually you make use of CMIR instead of entering the description manually. It is possible to modify the description in the sales order (no special configuration needed for this), for example, if the client requires a specific description in the invoice, but it is not feasible to maintain CMIR for some reason.

This is more about internal controls than about customizing, because the users should be aware when to enter a description manually and when to leave as it is.
