External Material Number range definition error

Hi to all, I have an issue with the definition of materials number range in MMNR. I read a lot of the posts in this comunity but I couldnt find a correct answer for my question.

We need to create a materials with using an external code provided by vendors... there are a lot of possibilities for those codes, some of them uses -, others . or / in their codes...others uses only numbers, others a mix between numbers and leters and simbols... but all of them are unique codes (there cant be two same codes).... so I dont understand how to create a new group + range for this cases...

Right now we have in the system only one external range:

06 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

but I cannot use this one, it fails when I enter a number...How should I handle this?

Any Ideas? using an Exit?

Hello Ignacio,

Could you post a few real examples so we could do some real testing?

Any chance of dissuading you from doing this?

From what you explained, it seems that with such approach you will have to apply the same logic for all your materials - all materials using the same external number range... no conventions, no easy way for a user to figure out what a specific material is by looking at the number... I do not know about you, but it does not seem like a very good design.

Why not use old material number instead of the internal material number for storing this value?

Or any other suitable field, just not to create a mishmash in your system...

Hi,

Another solution could be to add the supplier codes in the description of the material when it is created, if you want the code in purchasing documents, reports, outputs.

Hi to all, I solve it changing the actual range to 0000000000000 to ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

That worked.

Tks to all anyway!!!
