external e-mails?

How can I configure SAP system to send e-mails to extern? e.g. gmail.com, etc...?? Does anybody have any docus??

This is more of a Basis question so you might get more replies if you post it in the correct section.

I do know that tcode SCOT is involved but have only worked on this briefly.
