Currency translation

We want to post document in company code currency USD and want to translate it in foreign currency for eg, GBP. How can that be achieved? Tried to change the currency in General Ledger Master data .to GBP but the system wont let me post a document in USD because the Gl account is assigned to GBP in master data.

How can we post a document in USD and have the system translate to other currencies. FYI, the company code currency and the group currency is USD.

Hi Sheena,

First maintain GBP as hard currency for your country in OY01.

Next you have to maintain this in OB22 to your company code as hard currency which is third local currency.

Also maintain Exchange rates between GBP and USD, henceforth any transaction which you posted in the system records in USD and GBP as well. Add third local currency field in the FBL*N reports for the GBP figures. Also in many finalcial statements you can select hard currency to see the figures in GBP.

If the GL master currency is your company code currency, then this master allows any currency of the transaction.

If the GL master currency is not your company code currency, then this master allows only the GL master currency transactions.

Thanks for everyone response. But here is the situation. We would like to post transactions in both local currency USD and foregin currencies like GBP, EUR, AUD etc. I understand I can make one of the foreign currency as third currency under company code settigns but how do I deal with more than three currencies. This is required in one company code as there will be transactons posted in different currencies (upto five). SO how can we acheive that.

Please read all of the above responses one more time! Like we all said, pl make sure the GL account currency is same as company code currency. This will enable you to post to that account in ANY currency.

Is that your only requirement, or (as we all understood your initial post) do you also need to translate every accounting entry into GBP? If you don't have this requirement, all you need to ensure is the correct setting at the GL account master data.

Do you always need to have the values to be translated in GBP? If Yes, then there must be an additional currency configured in OB22. Every time you post transactions in any currency will also be translated to GBP.

As to trying to post to GBP, your GL must be maintained with company code currency. Otherwise, you won't be allowed to post any currency other than the currency set up in the GL master.

Do not change the GL account currency.

Where do you want to see the translation into GBP? In SAP? If yes, then you have to have GBP as one of the additional currencies for your company code in OB22 configuration. Once that is taken care of, you need to maintain exch. rate in OB08 for GBP:USD currency pair for exch rate type M. You will then see that the translation is happening automatically in SAP.

In OB22, we have the company code currency as USD, group currency as USD and hard currency is left blank. Should I put GBP as the hard currency? The exchange rates are already maintained for USD GBP.

By following what you are saying, can we make entries in USD and GBP both? If the additonal currencies are maintained in OB22.

Since you have USD as the group currency, and as your are saying that you need your numbers in GBP as well, that is your only option. Technically, GBP is probably not a hard currency for your USD company code (hard currency is really used in countries with high inflation), but using an additional currency (hard or index-based) is your only option in OB22. That said, why is it that you need translation in GBP for your postings? Is GBP the currency in which you need consolidated numbers for your group of companies? If yes, GBP should be your group currency! Think through your design well before you set up currencies at the client level and to your company codes.

As long as your GL account currency is same as your company code currency, you can post to that account in any currency. If your GL account currency is different from your company code currency, you can post to that GL account in only that GL account currency.
