System only allows back posting for 1 period (1 month).  This is to allow and reconsider any "past month" transactional MM related goods receipt to be entered (if missing or incorrect) so that the financial books are reconciled. Once reconciled, the finance and accounting team will close FI and MM periods.  This is a business control so that financial reports are finalized and submitted on a monthly basis.

You can also confirm this with FI team.

it is possible to enter any past date in PO creation, except you restict it by changing  message attributes of message

06 028 Purchase order date is in the past

to be an error.

Backposting referes only to material movements, it is only possible to post current and into previous period if back posting is allowed in MMRV. It is certainly not possible to post a GR in period 08 if the current period is 11.

When creating a PO with the past date, the system accepts it and there is no material document generated while creating PO.

Whereas in case of GR the system accepts only the current period which is valid (look into MMRV to see the current posting period). Regarding the back posting if the indicator posting allowed for previous month is set, the system can post the material in previous month inaddition to the current month.
