In the first two parts of this series we looked at your potential action plan and key questions when considering a SAP HANA or SAP S/4HANA implementation, including possible scope and scenarios.

In the third and final part of this blog series, let’s take a high level look at the SAP HANA migration considerations which relate to data volume management & custom code management. If you are not planning a “greenfield” implementation of SAP HANA, data volume management (DVM) and custom code management (CCM) will most likely need to be considered to keep down TCO.

These two important topics form part of the roadmap to SAP HANA & SAP S/4HANA and adequate time should be spent on them as part of your exploration & realization phases in your project or implementation plan.

Custom Code Management

In planning a migration to SAP HANA, the amount of custom code in your system will have an impact on the duration of the migration, TCO and the quality of the end result.

Coding techniques, such as database accesses in custom code, may have to be adapted to leverage the performance capabilities of SAP HANA. It is strongly recommended to review the coding for functional correctness before the migration.

The SAP Enterprise Support value map for custom code management has specific objectives around preparing custom code for a migration to SAP HANA & SAP S/4HANA and provides the necessary tools, information & enablement sessions/material to support this step of your journey.

The value map for custom code management will support boosting your ROI and smoothen the migration process.

Data Volume Management

ROI can also be improved before a migration to SAP HANA with a thorough data volume management strategy.

To achieve a lean database (i.e. only data used for day to day business processes and operations is kept in the system), data identification must take place. Analysis is required to establish whether or not data is used on a regular basis or can be flagged or archiving/deletion.

It is recommended to allow plenty of time before your SAP HANA migration for data volume management, the longer the time before the migration, the more you can implement and the better your DVM strategy will be to ensure a leaner and cleaner system before migration.

Get started on this analysis and strategy by following the step by step guides in the DVM Value Map & work with the team of DVM experts to help you.
