In this blog post, I would like to share some key points on how to set up and configure SAP Business One Alert Service along with some basic troubleshooting tips.

The Alert Service in SAP Business One is used to notify users whenever certain system events occur.

Alerts are divided into 2 categories:


  • System defined alerts: Predefined in SAP Business One.

  • User defined alerts: User created alerts based on customized user queries.

We have 5 different checks to perform if you encounter any issues with alerts/Job service not working correctly. We will investigate each one in more details below.

  • Log on to the SLD. Under the Services tab, make sure that the Job Service-Alert entry and its URL is present.

  • For SAP Business One version10, Service Layer should be installed and running correct. Make sure both the Service Layer URL links are there and open correctly under the SLD Control Center > Services.

  • Job Service-Alert status should be RUNNING from the Job Service page.

  • Check if the AlertSRV user exists in the database, is set as SuperUser and is not locked.

  • For SAP HANA, we have the option to uninstall the Job Service and Service layer instead of uninstalling the full Servertools. To perform Service Layer reinstall for SAP HANA, please check the SAP Note:  2419141.

1. Alerts setup and configuration:

  • Make sure that the Job Service is installed and configured correctly in the SLD (System Landscape Directory) as described in SAP Business One Administrator's Guide for both MSSQL and SAP HANA.

  • When you click on the Job Service-Alert URL, you will be able to open the Job Service Alert page.

  • Make sure that the Job Service is running in the System Landscape Directory.


  • For SAP Business One version 10, when the Job Service is installed correctly, the following 2 highlighted services should appear in the services tab from the System Landscape Directory:



Note- For SAP Business One version 9.2 and 9.3, only the Job Service – Alert should appear here.

  • Ensure that you have installed the Service Layer as shown above. In SAP Business One version 10.0 the Service layer is not part of Job Service installation and is a standalone component. It can be installed from the SAP Business One setup wizard. After installing the Service Layer, you should see the following entries in the Windows Services:



2. SAP Business One Client Configuration Check Points


  • To enable the Alert Service, go to Administration → System Initialization → General Settings →

  • Make sure that the option Display Inbox When New Message Arrives is selected to receive alerts in your inbox.

  • The Update Messages (Min.) corresponds to the refresh interval of the messages in the inbox.

  • Make sure the AlertSvc user is set as Superuser under Administration → Setup → Users

  • This user should not be locked

  • The password option should always be Password Never Expires


3. Setting up Alerts Via Email


  • Make sure the SAP Business One Mailer is working correctly and you can send an email from SAP Business One. Find a solution through the SAP Business One mailer guided answers

  • Make sure the company e-mail is correctly set up underAdministration → System Initialization → Company Details. Alert management uses this email address as the sender’s Email address when sending alerts via email. If only using Internal alerts, no email address needs to be defined here:

  • Make sure that you are using the same email address here which you have mentioned in the SAP Business One Mailer Configuration Window.


4. User Defined Alerts

The best place to start when troubleshooting user defined alerts, is to setup a basic alert.

Create a simple query for example select * from OCRD and assign it to an alert.

Set the alert as active and set a frequency for it to run.

If this simple alert with a query is running, then you will need to investigate further your queries attached to each alert. Here are some checkpoints for you.


  • Test the query used in the Alert in query manager and ensure it is not returning an error, is not empty and does not contain a Null value in the first column. Refer to SAP Note 1732391

  • Make sure the query used in the Alert does not contain a parameter for example [%0]. To detect if the Alerts contain such a parameter, please run the script attached to this SAP Note

  • SAP Business One Alert Management cannot process queries that need user interaction.
