Finally, after more than 2 years we could run an SAP for Utilities conference again, that took place this July in Munich. Now you have the opportunity to watch all the Recordings from the SAP for Utilities conference.

Having direct feedback in presentations and discussions makes it so much easier to judge, if the topics you are talking about resonate, compared with the video calls from the home office. My favorite remark during the three conference days came from a customer mentioning, that the conference “completely changed his perception of SAP”. And given the way he said this, I very much assume he meant, that the perception changed to the better.

I would like to keep some of this direct contact and feedback and not wait until we meet again at another conference - for example the next SAP for Utilities conference in Basel in April 2023 - and therefore start this blog series. A blog series is of course not the same as a personal interaction but perhaps it can go a bit in this direction. Therefore, please feel free to give feedback, ask questions or share your own experience.

Let’s start with a generic introduction: My presentation New Strategies Safeguarding the Energy System in Times of Global Crises has also been recorded.

With all the links to recordings, blogs and documents you receive hourly via the various social media channels, I however fully understand if you don’t have the time to listen to the recording for 20 minutes. Therefore I would like to summarize the train of thoughts:

  1. The energy system is under pressure due to various global crises (Climate change, Ukrainia war, Covid pandemic)

  2. Therefore the energy system needs to be rebuilt. Headwords include renewable energy generation, hydrogen, strengthening the grid, digitize and automate processes

  3. To support this several capabilities have to be enabled:

    1. Predict remaining useful life of assets

    2. Plan asset investment based on long-term energy demand

    3. Constantly monitor and predict asset health

    4. Forecast short-term energy demand and prices

    5. Support field technicians with detailed information and remote support

    6. Digitally enable each step of the energy supply chain

  4. This can be achieved via a digital transformation of the overall asset life cycle, for example with digital twins, virtual sensors, predicted asset failures and augmented reality for field technicians

  5. SAP solutions like Asset Performance Management, the mobile Service and Asset Manager solution and Enterprise Product Development enable these capabilities

  6. For a complete solution portfolio additional solutions and content is required. SAP is working with partners to provide this portfolio. Partners for example includes maps (ESRI), vegetation management (LiveEO), recognition of drone images (Intel) and Augmented Reality (TeamViewer)


So much for the introduction. Does it make sense to you? Is it of interest to you? This is of course still on a high level. Therefore I will dig deeper into some customer examples in the next parts of the blog series.
