Hello All,

I have been lucky enough to be a part of many discussions on S/4HANA Embedded Analytics, both with Internal Stakeholders(within SAP) and External Customers.

I am starting a series of blogs here, wherein I have tried to document some of the FAQ’s, which has come out of such discussions.

Part 2 can be found here -->

https://blogs.sap.com/2017/08/30/s4hana-embedded-analytics-faq-part-2/

Part 3 can be found here -->

https://blogs.sap.com/2017/08/30/s4hana-embedded-analytics-faq-part-3/

Hope this would be useful for your reference.

I understand that many of you are already working on the S/4HANA area. In case if you feel any discrepancy with any of the points/remarks mentioned in this blog,
Please feel free to add your comments here.

The official SAP document on SAP S/4HANA Embedded Analytics(November 2015 edition) can be found in the following link:

https://www.sap.com/documents/2015/11/7e25a80f-507c-0010-82c7-eda71af511fa.html

<<<<<Important Disclaimer: All the points mentioned here in this document are purely my observations and learnings from various stake holders. This should never be considered as an SAP official document >>>>>

I will try to update this on a regular basis,so that the same can be used as a Live reusable document.

So Here we go:

1) Is HANA CDS and ABAP CDS the same?

Remarks: CDS is an infrastructure for defining and consuming semantically rich data models using Data Definition Language (DDL), Query Language (QL) and Expression Language (EL). HANA CDS and ABAP CDS are two implementations based on the same specification.

The roadmaps of both ABAP-based and HANA CDS are different at this point in time. However, there is an alignment strategy of ABAP-based CDS models and SAP HANA models over time (architectural guideline). Unfortunately, there is no timeline or roadmap publicly available.

2) In HANA Live, we had a URL for Live Browser through which we could see all the HANA Views (VDM’s) based on the Functional Area. Do we have any such option to see the available CDS Views/VDM’s (9000+CDS)?

Remarks: View Browser (Shown Below) is the equivalent of the HANA Live Browser.
View Browser would provide the CDS views with clear differentiation on basic, composite and Consumption view and so on.

Also please note that there is another app called Query Browser (Shown Below). The Query Browser is not at all comparable to the View Browser. It shows the queries assigned to the currently logged-on user (when some annotations are added in the CDS view)

3) Do we have a list of BW and BO components that are involved in S/4HANA.

Remarks: The only component which is actively used in S/4HANA architecture is the Analytical Engine of the NetWeaver (built by BW). So when the button open in Design Studio it should rather mean: “Open in Fiori Multidimensional Reporting“ (using the DS template).
In the latest versions, you would see only the option “Open for Analysis” (run time
artifact of design studio) instead of “Open in Design Studio“.

4) Does APF (Analysis Path Framework) comes with a different license:

Remarks: No, It is a part of Fiori.

5) How can I see the underlying CDS behind a Fiori App.?

Remarks: : The following 2 options can be leveraged to find the underlying CDS.

a) Log into Fiori Apps Library:  (Here we are looking for Overdue Receivables App)https://fioriappslibrary.hana.ondemand.com/sap/fix/externalViewer/#/detail/Apps('F1747')

b) Option B:

6) What will happen when we create a ABAP CDS view with the annotation: @analytics.Datacategory: # (Ex: CUBE)

Remarks: When we activate a ABAP CDS view with the annotation @analytics.Datacategory: #CUBE, internally a transient provider is getting generated with the naming convention 2C<SQL View Name>. This Transient Provider can be exposed to some of the tools like below

a) BW Bex Query designer

b) Analysis Excel

NOTE: Please note that the above statement is technically correct for on prem, but the mentioned tools cannot be used in S/4HANA Cloud versions.

7) What will happen when we create a ABAP CDS view with the annotation: “@Analytics.query : True”.

Remarks: When we activate an ABAP CDS view with the annotation “@Analytics.query: True, internally a Transient query (sometime referred as Transient Universe) is getting generated with the naming convention 2C<SQL View Name.

This Transient Query can be exposed to some of the tools like below:

:a) BW RSRT

b) Analysis Excel

c) Design Studio
NOTE: Please note that the above statement is technically correct for on prem, but the mentioned tools cannot be used in S/4HANA Cloud versions.

8) How to integrate CDS Views in Lumira.

Remarks: First, we need to get the BW Data Acquisition connector ready.

This will help us to get the option “Download from SAP BW” while trying to add a New Data set.

Then we can leverage the Transient object and further create the visualization in Lumira.

NOTE: Please note that the above statement is technically correct for on prem, and for
the Cloud version, this will not be applicable.

9) How do we consume a CDS View in Fiori Smart Business Framework?

Remarks: We have “Create KPI” tile in Fiori Smart Business Framework, in which we further have an option to provide a CDS View name.

10) Where can I find the Best Practices for analytics with S/4HANA?

Remarks: Please be informed that RDS is renamed as Best Practice in S/4HANA.
