To enable compression by default on SQL Server:

  1. Go to SQL Server Management Studio and log on
  2. In the Object Explorer, right-click on the Server and select Properties
  3. Click on Database Settings
  4. Check the Compress backup option. (If left uncheckd, backups won't be compressed by default).
