Custom changes to standard maps & new content updates

What is the best practice around updating the standard maps?  Especially when new content updates occur in the future ?

One of our SMEs recommends making z-copies of all standard maps, and then we make changes to the z-maps and leave the standard maps alone.

Questions:

1.  Is this the best practice using z-copies?  The How-to guide does not mention this step, and it seems to say to edit the map directly for extension fields.

2.  What happens to enhanced mappings (based on standard content) when new content / upgrades occur ?

Appreciate any help ASAP.

Hi Tim,

The How-to-guide talks about how to extend the standard deliverd mapping in PI.

1.  Is this the best practice using z-copies?  The How-to guide does not mention this step, and it seems to say to edit the map directly for extension fields.

The guide does cover how to enhance the standard delivered mapping and it does not mention to edit the mapping directly. As per the guide you can create a custom software component and create a dependency to the standard software component so you will be able to enhance the mapping.

2.  What happens to enhanced mappings (based on standard content) when new content / upgrades occur ?

When a new content is imported into PI the changes are propogated to the enhanced mapping however there are no merge functionality. However you can open the enhanced mapping to pick up either new standard mapping form SAP or stick to the customer enhanced mapping. By default the customer enhanced mapping will be active.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Prakash
