Character restriction for a field already populated

I have got on the system already define a variable for a given textbox as VARCHAR2(1000 CHAR). Today I want to add a constraint to only allow 50 characters.

I was wondering what is gonna happen(and how to deal) with existing rows that already ahve more than 50 characters, how is gonna hybris work bringing the values?

an error? or just cut the variable?
