Alternative to opt-out directly via the button “Unsubscribe” in email clients

Hi Emarsys,

We'd like to remove the possibility for our contacts to unsubscribe directly via the “Unsubscribe” button located at the top of the emails in gmail, outlook or other e-mail providers. We'd like to hide/delete the standard email “Unsubscribe” button on the top of every email and only use our own current “Unsubscribe” link (bottom of the email)

How can we achieve this please ?

Thank you for your help.

If you are talking about the List-unsubscribe feature that is described at this SAP Emarsys Help document, I'm afraid to confirm that it's not possible to disable it.

This feature has been an industry-standard for the last years and is considered best practice, allowing providers and consumers alike to easily identify reputable senders as explained at the document linked above:

No good will ever come from sending emails to people who don’t want to receive them, so it is always in your interests to let them opt out. All commercial mail clients display prominent Report as Spam buttons in their toolbar which serves this function, but since this will also harm your reputation, you need to compete with this for visibility and ease of use.

  • List-unsubscribe reduces complaints, as mail clients give this button equal prominence with Report as Spam.
Since List-unsubscribe was an initiative from ISPs, including it in your mail header is a sign of good faith. Some clients even regard the words click here to unsubscribe as spam filter keywords. It also allows unsubscribe reputation services to more reliably monitor your unsubscribe compliance.
  • List-unsubscribe improves deliverability and helps you avoid spam filters.
In the same way that airlines show you the emergency exits before take-off, a prominent unsubscribe button increases confidence in your brand and makes contacts more comfortable receiving your marketing messages. Negative user feedback (like the "Report Spam" button) is one of the most significant factors in determining the sender reputation at the major ISPs, which is why the List-unsubscribe is strongly recommended by Gmail, for example.
  • In other words, List-unsubscribe increases engagement by building trust across the entire email marketing landscape.

The only scenario where the List-unsubscribe is not added is when you send Triggered Emails and the Transactional opt-in feature is activated in your account.
