Confused how to start a Career in SAP.

Hi All,

I am new to this forum. I want to start my career path in SAP. I am little bit confused which path to choose.

I have 3 years 7 months experience in IT. I started my career as a mainframes programmer and after 3.5 years I feel to move on to SAP. Currently I am working with a media group client, and I have basic knowledge of Sales to cash. I was exposed to SAP world when my client did a migration of billing system to SAP from mainframes, I have also contributed to that project.

Now when I am looking for a SD job, I am getting rejected as I am not a full phased functional consultant. But I have to take a proper decision about my career as this is the only time to learn new things and move ahead.

Please guide me what path I should follow! Would it be proper to learn SAP BO or go into SAP ABAP / BASIS or go into a functional side as SD/MM/ FICO.  How to prepare and is a certification mandatory for a JOB.

Many thanks.

Dear Priya,

Starting with your last question first, certification is not mandatory for JOB but certification course material is good literature for any SAP consultant.

In the world of SAP there is only one thing which is given weight-age and that is Live project experience. Live project experience supersedes all the other criteria like your qualification, certification, domain knowledge and experience etc.

Rejection is a very very common thing in the field of SAP

Please read the blog DOs & DON’Ts for SAP Career (Certification) on the basis of my on going journey from an Accountant t...

Conclusion is that, keeping all the DOs & DONT's in view If you get to work on SAP live project in any role, on the basis of available opportunity you may choose your career path. If you are thinking other way round that on the basis of certification or your domain knowledge and experience you will get to start your career in SAP than I am afraid, you may prove wrong.
