In 2018 I started working with one of the fabulous SAP coaches (thanks Allen). One of the first things I was asked was “what are your goals?”. I shrugged. So, we had to start from the beginning.
Do you know what you want to achieve professionally and personally?
Even if you do what your goals are, do you know how to achieve them?
We all have goals, some long term and some short term, we just may not have thought about them yet. So, to achieve your goal you need to set yourself a strategy.
Know your goals: before you can set yourself a strategy to achieve your goals you need to clearly define what they are. Only by knowing yourself well, and what you want to achieve, will you be able to achieve the results you need. Reflect on what you love doing or where you want to get to in the future.
Plan your development: Only you are in control of your own development. By planning what you want to achieve you can design your own future. Set yourself specific and challenging goals and write them down.
Explore your opportunities: they may be many ways to achieve your goals. These could involve job changes, additional training, asking to work on different projects etc. Explore all the options and plot these out as part of you plan.
Act on your plan: Having a plan is the first step but seizing the day and acting on your plan is what will achieve it. Become passionate about your goals and surround yourself by people that are also passionate about what they do.
Most importantly, do your impossible. If you’re not stretching yourself, you’re not growing, and you need to ensure you have all the tools and the right environment to do this. Thankfully at SAP I have the tools and support to achieve my now documented goals and it is this culture that means our people can “Bring Everything They Are, To Become Everything They Want” ?
