Clarification on ESS reset password

I am in need of small clarification regarding the reset of password in ESS.

When the password of the user has been reset with any new password by the BASIS team say 'INITPASS' and when the employee login with that password the system automatically leads to the change password screen.

How does the system identify that the password has been reset and which field/table is this information stored ?

USR02 has the login details. But which specific change takes place so that the system identifies to prompt for change in password.

Can anybody help me regarding the same.
