Without a good map, it’s often tough to know if you are heading in the right direction or just spinning your wheels.  Sometimes, knowledge really is (horse)power!

The same logic applies in the corporate world too.  Knowing what your customers want – when they want it – can lead to significant advantages in competitive environments.

For world-renowned Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli, this is particularly true.  Widely known for its performance tires, Pirelli has 22 tire manufacturing facilities across 5 continents and employs more than 37,000 people.  The company relies on near-real-time data to help ensure products are distributed to its dealer and retailer customers in a timely manner. 

Running a just-in-time supply chain is a data-intensive proposition.  Pirelli was using a SAP ERP system with custom code that, unfortunately, sometimes experienced bottlenecks when customers rushed to place orders simultaneously.  In order to overcome these bottlenecks, Pirelli realized they needed advanced technology to accelerate data collection and ensure that the information needed to efficiently run their operations was available to the business in near-real-time.

With SAP Rapid Prototyping, delivered through SAP ActiveEmbedded support, Pirelli was able to set up and test-drive SAP HANA processing speeds on nonstandard applications.  Experts with the SAP Active Global Support (SAP AGS) organization worked closely with Pirelli’s IT team to implement the proof-of-concept project.  The proof of concept helped Pirelli decide whether the in-memory technology of SAP HANA would meet their needs and replace their legacy system.  When the project was complete, SAP AGS helped document best practices for code development and conducted knowledge transfer so the company’s IT team can take on future challenges without necessarily needing outside assistance.

The SAP HANA prototype was a success.  With the help of SAP AGS delivered SAP ActiveEmbedded support, sales and distribution reports ran 8.4 times faster than before.  Faster access to product information, in turn, has reduced the number of back orders and enabled more informed decision making to ensure their products reach their customers on time.
