(This is episode 5 of 7 in a series about the Build journey for ISVs. Download the complete journey document here)

As part of the award-winning SAP PartnerEdge program, the ‘Build’ engagement model offers solution providers and independent software vendors (ISVs) the ability to rapidly design, build, and commercialize their applications under a single, comprehensive partner program. Whether they are creating standalone commercial software, extending SAP solutions, integrating and connecting to SAP data, or modernizing an existing application, the SAP PartnerEdge – Build program will support them at every stage of their journey, which we have divided in the following steps:

This is the fifth in a series of blog posts explaining the ISV build journey. If you want to catch up, please click on the links below:

In last week's episode, the partner learnt what they want to develop. Now they need to know how to develop their application. In this blog post, we cover the build and innovate stage.

Enablement resources

In the build and innovate stage, we offer several enablement tools and resources which are shown in the picture below (for an explanation about the colors and icons used, please read the introductory blog post). All of them are also listed in the “Build and Innovate” section* on the SAP PartnerEdge portal.

A key enablement resource is the SAP Learning Hub edition for SAP PartnerEdge, which offers high-quality content and peer collaboration via social learning, with 24/7 access. Through SAP Learning Hub, the partner can access solution-specific learning rooms. These include learning maps*: step-by-step, role-based guides that will help developers to find the enablement tools they need and to elevate their skills and knowledge to the next level. Importantly, SAP Learning Hub also provides access to learning content*.

Another great resource is the SAP Developer Center. It hosts developer-related information for each SAP product. As well as documentation and key feature descriptions, the Developer Center offers hundreds of tutorials: step-by-step instructions which can be followed by the developer to increase their development skills.

I want to highlight some great additional enablement resources which the SAP Cloud Platform product team has made available for developers. Similar assets are also available for the other technology areas, but for the sake of simplicity I’ll stick to my example of SAP Cloud Platform as in my previous blog post. First, the team has published several Learning Journeys. These are structured visual guides for SAP Cloud Platform based-solutions, designed to help the developer understand and navigate the path to become fully competent with SAP Cloud Platform.

Code samples are published on GitHub. These are straightforward, educational, and extensible sample applications which show best practice coding. Developers can reuse and build upon the source code of these sample applications.

Academy videos are free video tutorials on YouTube. They provide visual guidance in a consumable video format and are focused on real world scenarios. Over 50 videos are available today already, with more planned.

On SAP Developer Center the partner can find development tutorials specific for SAP Cloud Platform.

In addition to the enablement resources listed on this slide, developers can also follow courses at openSAP, or attend webinars and replays accessible through the Build Better website.

Managing the app lifecycle

Especially for SAP PartnerEdge – Build partners, I want to mention the Manage My Apps* app, which is shown by the blue line in the middle. It is an SAP Fiori app, accessible via the SAP PartnerEdge launchpad* or directly from the SAP PartnerEdge portal, for managing the solution and go-to-market lifecycle of partner applications. It’s mandatory for partners to register their applications and to mark them "development completed" when they're ready with the app's development phase. The app is then ready for validation, which happens in the next stage.

Open ecosystem – Build members do not have access to this application and don’t need to register their app. Should they however decide to bring their app to market and leverage SAP's go-to-market benefits, they will need to upgrade to full partnership. When doing so, they will be able to register the app and proceed to the next stage.

Next up: Step 5 – Go-to-Market!

In the next blog post, I will cover the go-to-market stage in greater detail. I will cover the app validation process, as shown in the preview below. I will also elaborate on the various go-to-market benefits that are available for SAP PartnerEdge – Build partners. Stay tuned for more!
