Whoever said that organizing a community event is hard, he or she was painfully right. After attending a few SAP community events my former colleague Ovidiu Hancila and I decided to give it a try and bring this type of events closer to our home country Romania. Big thumbs up for all SAP Inside Tracks, as well as the #ui5con and the #itconsapcj.

We were overwhelmed with the high number of people wishing to attend the first edition. Just looking at the number of registered participants, we are proud to raise the bar on gender diversity (59% to 41%) within the SAP Inside Tracks community.
The event started on Saturday morning with many curious people gathering.
The first track was presented by none other than Vitaliy Rudnytskiy. We were very happy to have such an experienced speaker to kick start the day and there is no better topic than an overview of SAP Leonardo to get the crowd warmed up. A member of the SAP Developer Relations team, Vitaliy was SAP-branded head to toe.
Victor Ionescu talked about applying DevOps principles to the SAP Cloud and On-Premise world. As an experienced developer and architect, Victor touched upon some key concepts of continuous everything (Cx) in the SAP environment. You may find his slide here.
Rainer Winkler shared some of this knowhow with a talk called ‘Fail fast and automatically tested - How to build robust SAP applications’ and decided to make us a surprise and use this event to open source one of his projects called SimpleRequirementTool. You may find more details here.
Flavia Palfi’s very entertaining talk called ‘Leading to the future’ pointed out some insights about the difference between generations and how to help people work together. One quote stayed in my mind: “If speaking kindly to plants helps them grow then imagine what speaking kindly to humans can do” – this should be written at the door of every workspace.
SAP Mentors Lars Hvam used the opportunity to increase even more the awareness of abapGit – open source and innovation with ABAP. Kudos to all the contributors. Because #ABAPisNOTdead and you can have fun with it, he gave a second talk called ‘The dark side of web applications in ABAP’. A cool idea about adopting OpenAPI Specificatons (formerly known as Swagger) in ABAP. His slide may be found here and here.
Serban Petrescu's session ‘Building fancy apps with JSX for UI5’ proposed an alternative to UI5 development and a simplified method for creating custom controls. It was interesting to see the GitHub ratings for different JS frameworks (React, Vue, Babel) compared to openUI5. His presentation can be found here.
Ovidiu Hancila and I gave a short session called ‘BUILDing the RIGHT IT before you build IT RIGHT’ about pretotyping and how to use SAP BUILD to kickstart Fiori development within organizations.
And to close the event, Paul Max and Carlos Vieira from Nagarro gave the key-note titled ‘IoT: a glimpse into Industry 4.0’. Great insights into the current trends of automation and data collection using IoT devices.
Many thanks to all the speakers, sponsors and participants for making this event memorable. Given the fact that this was the first edition, we consider it to be a success and look forward to future editions.
In the breaks between the talks we had some Yoga sessions to make the audience more comfortable. And even the experienced SAP mentors learned something new ?
