SUSE for SAP HANA – what benefits does this combination offer to customers? Concise answers to this question were provided by a panel discussion at TechEd 2015 in Barcelona between Sid Siper, Senior Director of Go to Market at SAP, and Dirk Oppenkowski, Global Alliance Director SAP at SUSE.

The discussion focused on the functions that SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications uses to support disaster recovery for various HANA scenarios: whether on-premise or in the cloud.

“More and more companies are opting for HANA, the market share is growing rapidly,” said SAP Manager Sid Siper in his opening statement. It is therefore crucial that SAP’s in-memory platform offers customers performance, security, high-availability, and disaster recovery, so that they can grow their deployments to include multiple nodes and true big data environments.

Since 2011, SUSE and SAP have been constantly working on ways to better satisfy these requirements. And with considerable success: SUSE Linux Enterprise for SAP Applications is the recommended and supported operating system for HANA and is currently used in more than thousands of SAP HANA installations.

Even Better Disaster Recovery

As an example of the added value that SUSE offers for running HANA, Dirk Oppenkowski from SUSE mentioned SAP HANA System Replication, which aims to ensure high availability and disaster recovery of HANA system environments. This function allows customers to replicate their HANA system within the same data center or across two data centers to compensate for system failures. SUSE supports this function by providing two resource agents to automate the HA scenarios of HANA systems.
