Since the SAP Community platform has moved into its new home, our team has received plenty of comments and questions -- and we're doing our best to address them all!

One of the most common questions is: Why did my content end up in the spam filter?

In this post, I'm going to answer that. I'm also going to outline steps you can take to avoid that issue -- and to make things go much more smoothly for all of us.

First off, our new platform has a spam filter powered by machine learning. The system is scanning content as it comes in -- and that includes all the content that got migrated over from the legacy platform -- to identify anything that might be spam. Sometimes, it identifies spam correctly. And sometimes…well…it doesn't.

The moderation team checks the spam filter regularly, processing the real spam (and banning the spammers who tried to pollute our platform) and releasing the non-spam (for lack of a better term) back into the community.

By helping the system understand which content is spam (and which isn't), we are teaching the filter to leave the good content alone. But that process requires time, and the system will make mistakes. Therefore, we ask for your patience as we take the steps necessary to get the system operating optimally…permanently.

If you notice that your content got marked as spam, please do not report it to our moderation team. Our moderators are aware of what's going into spam, and they are working to clear it out as quickly as possible -- but it may take up to 24 business hours in some cases.

Reporting to the moderation team just introduces additional actions that must be completed -- and, therefore, it slows things down by creating unnecessary work. Trust us: We want your valuable content on the community, too, and we will make sure it ends up on the site. You just need to give us some time to work through the filter throughout the day.

Unfortunately, we can't always predict what will end up in spam. Just as the system is learning, so are we! But we have identified some common scenarios that you might want to avoid if possible (as they could lead to your content ending up in spam jail):

  • Editing content in quick succession
  • Editing old (previously published) content

Why would those things come across as "spammy"? Well, not to reveal too much about how the spam sausage is made, but it's a common spam practice to publish something, then come back later to sneak in spam content/links. (Yeah, spammers, we're wise to you.)

Since it’s against our best practices to update old content – we cover that in Step 10 of our new tutorial (which we recommend for all members, new and old!) -- you shouldn’t be editing previously published posts anyway.

(As an aside: We’re aware that there are formatting issues with some old posts that got migrated, but as we’ve been communicating, there’s no way to replicate the customized html and formatting copied over from Word docs on previous platforms – and you could end up breaking the html altogether if you attempt to modify migrated content. So it might be best to live with that white space, realize that no one will hold that typo against you, and try to write shorter posts that don’t require anchor links and a table of contents. You’re always free – and encouraged – to publish new posts with the most recent information, instead of adding to older posts that readers might overlook.)

There's no guarantee that these workarounds will keep your content out of the spam filter, but we will continue to work to empty the spam queues and help our filter better distinguish true spam. For your part, please don't open alerts or otherwise contact us when your posts get stuck in spam. It doesn't help, and it actually hurts.

@jerryjanda

Thanks for the explanation, Jerry!

I just had a comment marked as spam (possibly because of an external link?) and if I hadn't read your article beforehand, I might have clicked on the link in the yellow message I got to "submit an abuse report."

BaerbelWinkler_0-1707747523810.png

Is there a means to update this message to something along the lines you describe in your article? Otherwise people affected may just click on the link and you'll get more reports intead of fewer.

Cheers

Bärbel

Thank you for raising that point, @BaerbelWinkler. I agree that it is causing confusion. Worse, my post and the message contradict each other. I'm trying to find out if we have the ability to change the latter.

Kind regards,

Oh well... I just read this after I hit the report abuse button after my blog was marked as SPAM... (I adjusted a URL...)

@jerryjanda Is there a way to undo this?

Well, your spam filter has now officially diverted me from SAP Community at all!

I was trying to make post on the forum, asking for tips on how to solve a certain issue.

Upon first post, I noticed that all the line breaks I carefully added to the paragraphs using 'preformatted' style were removed and were converted to one single line.

Then I discovered the dots, where it lets me add code snippets. Pretty neat, I thought!

However, upon saving it continuously failed to do so, complaining about incorrect use of HTML (which I did not use). After a few tries, my post was removed and marked as spam.... What the??

You cannot imaging how beyond livid I am right now! Being an SCN user since 2003, I have seen the platform degrading bit by bit, but never ever had I experienced something like this.

So yes, I was indeed "Editing content in quick succession", but mainly because 1) the 'preformatted' paragraph style did not work as expected and 2) the 'Code' panel apparently incorporated some invalid HTML

Going back to Slack now, sorry...

F*@#$)**@#$ spam 'filter' !!!

Just spent an hour composing an answer and because of the finicky formatting features I had to edit/repost a few times and ... *BAM* ... "this reply has been flagged and removed as spam".

How about updating the spam 'filter' to take into consideration the history of the person posting the message/reply/answer?

And the cherry on top ... a few minutes later I'm awarded the 'Contributor' badge (for posting spam).

... crossing fingers and hoping this comment isn't flagged as spam ...

@Mark_A_Parsons - I have released your answer now.

wrote a precise post regarding an issue only to be flagged as a spam, on top of that will have to wait 24 business hours for someone to review and release.  this thing needs serious rework.

I have been releasing a quarterly blog for SAC entitled Sneak Peek into SAP Analytics Cloud release for QX 202X since 2020 and today my blog for Q3 2024 is marked as SPAM. Highly bizarre!

After decades of blogging, my latest blog is marked as spam and is removed.
Thank you very much. I guess this is the end of my year long journey in SAP Community.

If they mark a blog by @retired_member as spam I guess that should ring a bell (continuously) for someone until the problem has been fixed.

Hi team,

I just spent a lot of time for a blog and it has been removed as spam 😞 This is very discouraging.

Can you please look into this and do the needful.

Thanks & Regards,

Win

Hey team,

can you please provide a solution for this?
I wrote a blog post today and because of another issue with the blogging system, a newline is added before and after each coding statement, whenever I open the post in the edit window.
So, after releasing I figured, that those newlines had again been added. So I was trying to remove them, hit save... and boom, I am now in the Spam discussion as well.

Please have a look into this (both issues), as it immediately breaks all the motivation and enthusiasm after long hours of work trying to provide good content.

Kind Regards,

Mike

@KjetilKilhavn To clarify. We (the human beings here) do not mark anything as spam unless it really is spam. And we would certainly not mark one of Horst's blog posts as such. The spam filter on the new platform is powered by machine learning, and it sometimes identifies spam incorrectly.
We continuously monitor the spam filter and release the non-spam content as soon as we see it. It will normally be released within a few minutes.

@acharyaw your blog post will not be removed or deleted. It is a spam filter, which the moderation team check regularly. All posts that are incorrectly marked as spam, will of course be re-released immediately.

Hi @mike_zaschka

The whitespace bug is a known bug that we are working with our vendor to release a fix for. We will soon be releasing more information for you so that you can follow progress on bugs, change requests and enhancements to the community platform: https://community.sap.com/t5/what-s-new/community-feedback-and-contributions-in-2025/ba-p/13967417

I suspect your blog post ended up in the spam filter because you edited the post a few times in quick succession. (as Jerry mentioned in his post)
If possible, we recommend to avoid this.

@AnnePetteroe: Thank you for the feedback. It's really hard for me to understand that the code bug is still a thing as it affects every single blog post containing source code for quite a while now and it's actually making people leave the platform. Nevertheless, good news it will be fixed. 👍

Hi Team,

When SAP community moved to new platform, I was not a fan of it as I liked the older version better.
After a long time, I wanted to give it a try and published a blog and after seeing the incorrect spacing in the blog and the code. I edited the blog again to fix that.

I just came back hours later to check the blog and it is marked as Spam. I also didn't receive any notification regarding that.
After reading this blog, it seems that this issue has been going on for almost a year now and is still not fixed.

It would be helpful if we get a warning message that our blog will be moved to spam folder if we try to edit blog in quick succession so that it helps those who are not aware of this rule.

Please have a look into this as it breaks the motivation to try the new SCN and discourages one to share their thoughts.

Thanks & Regards,

Vivek
