Healthy discourse is a critical component for any community, and our latest badge progression set is designed specifically for members who kick these conversations off by starting discussions.
As with the other progression badges that we introduced recently, this set will contain five badges that will be awarded retroactively – meaning, if you’ve already initiated discussions in the community, you may get one or more badges tomorrow (Thursday, October 9). You’ll earn the first badge for the first discussion you started, the second for starting three discussions, the third for starting ten, and the fourth for starting twenty. If you’ve been especially chatty, you may even get the fifth badge – awarded for starting fifty discussions!
If you’re unfamiliar with discussions in SAP Community, you’ll find several lively ones within our various groups. We have groups for locations around the world, fun activities (such as Devtoberfest), common interests (including the community’s very own Welcome Corner), and more.
Unlike the Q&A boards (where members seek solutions to their problems), discussions generally focus on an open topic and allow other members to share their thoughts and opinions. There’s no right answer – just an invitation to participate in a friendly chat.
If you’d like to start a discussion, first find a group that interests you. Click the big blue button near the top of the group’s page to join. You can’t miss it. (Note that some private groups may require that their owners approve your request to join, but you can join any public group right away with the click of the button.)
If you try to start a discussion before joining a group, the option will be grayed out.
Joining the group opens the option to start a discussion.
While we understand that our badge enthusiasts may be eager to complete this new set quickly, please make sure that you only start discussions that are relevant to the corresponding group(s) in which you want to post – and that the discussions are meant to encourage group members to participate in the conversation. Starting an off-topic discussion may earn you a badge, but it won’t generate any interest. A group owner or curator may even opt to remove the discussion if it doesn’t fit the group’s purpose. Best to spend some time in a group to get to know it and its members before starting a discussion there.
Once you’re comfortable with a group (and feel confident you can strike up appealing discussions in it), take advantage of the opportunity to earn badges from the new set. Or if you’re already active in groups (with several discussions to your credit), you may earn one or more badges when we introduce the new set tomorrow.
Want to know how many badges from this set you’re entitled to? Here’s what you need to do.
Log in to SAP Community, then select “My content.”
Scroll down to the “Private Stats” section of your content page and look for the “Discussions Started” entry. That number will help you determine how many badges coming your way tomorrow. For example, for the member below, he can expect badges for starting one, three, and ten discussions – as his fourteen discussions are more than enough to earn him the first three badges in the set. He’ll need to be a little more active in group discussions to earn the last two (for twenty and fifty discussions, respectively). Still, he’s well on his way to completing the set!
We’ll need a few hours to assign the badges tomorrow, and we’ll award them one at a time from the lowest to highest. Our friend above can expect three notifications (one for each badge that he earned, beginning with the badge for starting his first discussion), and you can expect one or more yourself if you’ve been actively starting discussions in the community. (If your badges haven’t shown up by Friday the 10th, make sure to log out and in again.)
Don’t forget: These badges are meant to thank the members who take the time to make positive contributions to SAP Community. Answer a question, write a blog post that educates other members, leave a kudo on content that you enjoy, begin a friendly discussion. Each of those actions helps create a healthier, happier community – and can earn you badges that show our appreciation.
