Video Intro to SAP Community

Over the last couple months, you may have noticed some of the work our team has been doing to help newer SAP Community Network (SCN) members navigate the numerous (and sometimes overwhelming) resources and rich content available in our communities.

For example, the refreshed SCN homepage reflects a more inclusive and descriptive entry point for first-time visitors, helping them identify which community/communities are right for them, and introducing some of the ways to engage and contribute. Diving deeper, the SCN User Guide offers detailed descriptions and tutorials of available features and tools  to help all community members - from newbies to top contributors - get the most out of the site.

And I'm pleased to announce the latest asset:  a short video (2.5 minutes) created with Duarte Design showcasing the benefits of joining, participating, and contributing in SCN. Duarte's done a ton of great work, including Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" keynote, which became the Oscar Award-winning documentary. While SAP Community Network was overlooked by the Academy this year, I'm pretty happy with the accolades we've been receiving from the tech industry, like Ray Wang giving the Ecosystem high praise ("SAP's ecosystem strategy should be credited with saving SAP during this round of crisis.") and the only "A" rating after December's  SAP Influencer Summit.

 

 

But we can do more. That's why a big 2010 focus for us is not just on growing membership, but on growing active membership. A typical distribution for social participation is described in the 90-9-1 principle, which says 1% of users typically create the majority of the content (like the Active Contributors on SCN), 9% edit or add to existing content, and 90% consume content. The distribution for SCN looks more like 96% consumers, 4% editors, and 0.1% creators; so there's definitely potential to move more consumers to editors (asking/answering questions in forums, adding to wikis, etc.) and then to creators (writing blogs or articles, creating podcasts and eLearnings, etc.)

We're just getting started with the updated homepage, user guide, and video. Please feel free to share this video, your personal SCN story, and other resources with peers and colleagues who may or may not already be on SCN - and encourage them to get active.
