My colleague marcusm asked me to join his "Blog it Forward" challenge. I'm using it as a learning process to blog on SCN and maybe as a byproduct, some people can learn a little about me.
Here are the questions he asked me to answer:
What was your dream job as a kid?
When I was a little kid, I didn't really know what I wanted to be. I think there's pressure on kids to know from a very young age what they want to be and to me, that's niether fair nor realistic. How is a six year old or a ten year old going to know enough about all of the options that are out there in this great big world to make any kind of a decision other than zookeeper or ballerina? If really pressed, I would have to say high school teacher.
What is your favorite place in the world?
I have been blessed with many opportunities to visit many places. There are only ten states I haven't visited, and that number will be nine next month when I go to Tulsa. I've also had the opportunity to visit 28 countries and have even lived in four of them. I've seen many very special places, but the one that is my favorite is Palm Springs, California. Palm Springs - and the entire Coachella Valley all the way to Indio - is like no other place I know. I have visited Palm Springs on quite a few occasions. I've been there on business and on pleasure. I've stayed in big hotels, small hotels, and at friends' houses. I've driven there and I've flown there. Palm Springs is not a secret. It's a top tourist destination for many people and it has been for many years. It means different things to different people, but to me, it means golf. It is the one place where you can wear golf shoes anywhere in town and not feel out of place. Sure, Florida and the Carolinas have golf. Scotland has golf. Mexico has golf. But none of these places has the perfect weather, 0% chance of rain, and spectacular views that Palm Springs has.
What was the most fun project you ever participated in and why?
In the early '90's, I had the opportunity to work on a banking system implementation in Mexico City. For this project, I was the lead technical consultant and I shared an apartment with a colleague. He and I had a great time getting to know the city and the people and the culture. The guys from the customer side who were on the project were hilarious. Marco and Miguel. I'll never forget them. We developed a close relationship over the course of the project and they even set me up on a date with the woman who would later become my wife!
