My colleague marcusm challenged me to "Blog it Forward" and share some insight into the mind of a Solution Engineer. Here goes nothing!
A little about me:
My name is Hannah, and I’m a consumer, a new dog owner, a Philadelphian and believe it or not, an improv comedian (but what SE isn’t, really?).
Also, I am a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution engineer with a focus on our sales and marketing solutions. I love my job because it allows me to work with countless businesses of various sizes and industries. I especially enjoy studying “our customer’s customer.” CRM can be complex, but by understanding the end consumer, there is more room to understand a complete business.
Here are the questions Mark asked me to answer:
What was your dream job as a kid?
I think the more appropriate question might be, “what wasn’t?”
By the time I was 7 I had already started more than 10 small businesses – little Hannah ran a hotel, operated a nature sanctuary, managed a rock-painting store, owned her own deli and wrote plays on commission. Though my startups were imaginary, it was clear from the start that not only did I love the study of business processes, but I was also destined to be a weird little girl. Combined with the fact that I couldn’t stop talking, my entrepreneurial spirit paved the way for a strong career in presales.
(To this day, some of these girls are still my best friends)
What is your favorite place in the world?
I’ve been lucky enough to see many domestic and international cities, and live in a few different parts of the country. Despite all I’ve seen, nothing can top my hometown of Brimfield, Massachusetts. In my sleepy town with one traffic light and approximately 3,000 people who all know each other, winter hits hard, fall is crisp, spring is gradual and summer is bright and temperate. Filled with New England history and tradition, it really is the most beautiful place on earth.
It’s also very close to my first employer, the renowned 1830’s living history museum, Old Sturbridge Village. (I swear I didn’t churn butter – I worked in marketing!)

What was the most fun project you ever participated in and why?
I was recently on a team that was tasked with creating innovative ideas for a large social media client. The goal was to show how our technology could help increase advertising revenue without negatively affecting their user’s experience. I loved this project because it allowed me to put myself in the shoes of a social consumer and assess technology’s ability to enhance e-commerce experiences through non-traditional channels. (As an avid e-shopper and over spender, this one was right up my alley.)
In general, the most fun I have as in SE is when I get to be creative. Some of my favorite moments are when I can connect with customers or colleagues through metaphors and mixed media. Connecting with someone on an emotional level is so much more powerful than just demonstrating software, and it is what truly drives me at SAP. Here is a video I created to introduce an internal training that dennis.ruffing and I did, in a fun way.
I think the resemblance is uncanny!
