Hello Abdul,

are these Windows 2008 R2 running as virtual machines on VMware or another hypervisor? Are they no Failover Clusters?

Then you can simply upgrade the OS via in-place upgrade. Test this on you Dev system. Copy the extracted ISO of Windows Server 2012 R2 to a local folder, for example C:\install.

Then start the Microsoft setup.exe installer from there. If you have installed an antivirus solution, you have to uninstall it first. Microsoft's setup.exe will also tell you, if it's possible to upgrade the OS to Windows 2012 R2 or not. That's maybe due to incompatible drivers, setup.exe detected during OS check.

But if the source OS is running as a virtual machine already, the in-place upgrade works in 99,99% of all cases.

If you try it, make sure you have an actual file system backup! 🙂

Best regards,

Kalle
