Uploading ABAP roles in Portal

Hi All,

I hv some fundamental questions regarding uploading of roles in Portal:

What is the need to upload ABAP roles in Portal? Through user mapping we already establish connectivity of portal userIDs with userIds in R/3 or ECC (wherein most cases these IDs are the same). Hence, shouldnt the portal userId inherit these r/3 roles by the virtue of user-mapping? If so, then why do we need to hv these roles in Portal? Thanks in advance!

Uploading ABAP roles in Portal is not the same as User mapping. User mapping only maps a portal user to its ECC user. This means, if you have a SAP Transaction iView to run, lets say, the transaction code me23n, when the user x logs on to the portal and runs the t-code me23n, the portal logs x into ECC as user y, if x-y are mapped in the Portal.

Uploading ABAP roles is different. For example, you can connect the portal to the BW and loadup BW roles to Portal, although I wonder how many people are still doing it.

Thanks for your prompt response. I understand the first point of your response on the user mapping concept etc. Although I haven't understood the motivation for uploading the ABAP roles?if attempting to connect EP with BI, wouldn't usermapping suffice? what are the other scenarios for which role upload is desired? If there are any documents you could point me to, I'll appreciate that. thanks again!

Prachi,

I can speak about Role upload from BI standpoint. Lets say you have x BW roles defined with certain number reports/queries for each. If you want to iViews for each of these reports, you can either create iViews manually or do role upload to EP, that way iViews, roles get automatically created.

I don't know how role upload will be used in ECC-EP. I don't believe Role upload is widely used.
