Hello,
Occasionally our system startup hangs. The database opens okay, but all database accesses hang with "enq: OW - initialization"
This has started to happen only after we used Oracle TDE to encrypt tablespaces. TDE is setup to automatically open the Oracle Wallet.
Restarting the database resolves the issue.
I noticed that the hanging sessions seem to wait for the SMON process, which is accessing datablocks in UNDO segments. The database was shutdown normally with SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE.
What can cause hangs on "enq: OW - initialization"??
Kind regards,
Peter

Hi Janos,
We traced the startup and wallet initialization.
The final lock holder is a shadow process that is trying to open the auto login wallet (cwallet.sso) using a fcntl call at the code level. The problem only happens if the accessed NFS mount has been remounted. We will ask the H/W vendor to investigate the next time the issue occurs.
Kind regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,
This happens during Database Wallet initialization, when other sessions already begun an initialization.
This is no yet known to us in SAP Product Support as an issue.
I recommend you to check if you applied the required SBP correctly to meet our prerequisites.
Otherwise, it would be wise to get in touch with us in SAP Product Support in the frame of an SAP Incident.
