Solution Manager 7.2 SPS Update with SUM

Hello, we are in the process of updating our Solution Manager 7.2 from SPS2 to SPS4. We started SUM (SUM10SP18_8-20006676) for the ABAP instance, but Java seems not to be updated. The Stack XML file we generated in Maintenance Planner contains ABAP and Java instance (created a dependency between both). Note 2277058 (Central Note - Software Update Manager 1.0 SP18) says "By default, you update the ABAP and Java part of the SAP Solution Manager in one step using the Software Update Manager (SUM)." Is this only true for SolMan 7.1? Also it's not possible to register two SUM directories at the Hostagent, so what is the suggested procedure to upgrade both (ABAP and Java) at same time or is this not possible?

Thanks, Markus

Hello All,

I have installed a fresh solution manager 7.2 sps02 with both the abap and java stacks installed on the same host. Now when I attempt to upgrade the stacks individually to sps04 while generating the stack.xml using the maintenance planner, I am not able to get the upgrade xml to sps04.

I mean that there is no such option for that sps04. I am following Yogesh patel's blog and have done the installation so far. Kindly help me out please.

Hi Markus,

You have 2 SIDs in Solman 7.2 ...one for ABAP and other for JAVA and hence you required 2 stack files as well.

Further SUM guide use ABAP version and corresponding link for ABAP solman 7.2 SP2 to SP4 upgrade

similarly SUM guide use JAVA version and corresponding link for JAVA solman 7.2 SP2 to SP4 upgrade

this should help further

Thanks

Hello All,

Once you have SAP Solution manager up and running as 7.2 you need to upgrade them one by one in other words ABAP and JAVA stack

For ABAP use ABAP SUM URL

For JAVA use JAVA SUM URL

More SUM info :

Hello Markus,

After installed a fresh SOLMAN 7.2 SP02 (ABAP and JAVA stack separatelly) you have to configure SLD and LMDB and then generate the XML for Java part with Maintenance Planner, as per my understand, it is not possibly to update both stack at the same time since Solman 7.2 is not dual stack anymore.

Hi Markus,

I am wondering which link you have used to start SUM?

https://<server>:1129/lmsl/sumjava/SM1/dual.html should work in your case.

Kind regards,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Yes, we tried the SUM dual stack link, but there was an error like "this is a ABAP only system" or "this is not Dual stack" - I don't remember exact. Have you already used the Dual stack option on a Solution Manager 7.2 with two seperate stacks?

Yes, I did the upgrade with the dual stack option. However, afterwards I had to do the dual stack split. You can check this page for more information about the technical behaviors.

Hi Yogesh, thanks for your answer. Can anyone confirm? I cannot really imagine because it's not really feasible for update of a production system. This would mean really long downtime.

If ABAP and JAVA on same host its not possible to upgrade them at the same time even they are single stacks.

Upgrade them one by one

Hi Yogesh. Where did you get this info from? I'm running the spstack5 update at the moment, and I have SUM abap and Java running in parallel on the same host without problems. Just make sure to use separate SUMs. It didn't make sense after ABAP instance downtime, doing the entire update of the JAVA instance (uptime and donwtime). This would be an huge total downtime of Solution Manager
