SAP best practices to Integrate S/4 HANA to Mulesoft

Hi All,

Can anyone please share best practices for data retrieval from S/4 HANA to third-party middleware (Mulesoft)?

We needed to share company code information from S/4 HANA to Mulesoft on-demand basis, we know it can be done with RFC, OData, and CPI/BTE/API Management. We’d like to leverage new functionalities with our S/4 system and we would like to know what is the SAP recommended way to integrate Mulesoft with S4.

I guess the best practice from SAP perspective would be buying license for SAP PO or CPI (or however it's called nowadays) 😉
Jokes aside, I believe it's a very broad question.
There are plenty of scenarios in which still good, old IDoc are exchanged. There are Web Services that are in use (i.e. BP integration with external systems like SAP C4C) and there are OData services that could be utilized as well.
In my opinion it mostly depends what data objects are to be integrated.
Anyway I'm really curious what is the experience of people who actually integrated S4 using Mulesoft thus hoping for interesting answers to your question.

Best practice is for "Mulesoft" to use the standard whitelisted APIs. You can find them in the API Business hub.

If none would be available, next best practice is to create custom APIs (= OData services) in your S/4HANA system that "Mulesoft" can then use.

No matter which option you use, you should also place SAP BTP API Management in between because you will want one central point to maintain all your APIs.

If you are using Mulesoft as your integration broker, you have the options of using Anypoint Connectors "SAP S/4HANA OData Connector 2.3" or "SAP S/4HANA SOAP Connector 2.2" for S/4 HANA OP.

Then, you have to investigate the API Business Hub to find the APIs that suits best your case.
