Bonjour everyone,

I'd like to know if anyone managed to create raw devices on redhat 9 to provide to SAP ASE Database?

Starting in Redhat 9, the binaries for /bin/raw are not shiped anymore and a different method should be use to manage raw devices.

Also, are there still advantages going with raw devices instead of filesystem, I know it useds to but with today's technology, I don't know anymore!?

Hello William,

That will not be possible.
RHEL 9.0 does not provide a raw device module for the kernel. We cannot use devices that the OS does not support even if our product supports it, please see:
Note 3440698 - Support for Raw device on Linux - SAP ASE
Note 2173039 - Device settings and Raw Partitions & File Systems properties for SAP ASE on Red Hat

Thanks, I've already reverted back to Linux 8 and it's working just as intended.

Hope 16.1 will take care of that problem.

Thanks

Hi William, this is not something ASE can take care of, if the OS doesn't provide the raw device module, then there is no option for ASE to be able to use it.

Well, even though raw device are not supported anymore, character device are still a thing and will be for as long as there will hard drive!

If Oracle can work with character devices without the use of /dev/raw, I'm sure SAP can do the same!  ... that bein said, if SAP ASE is still a thing!
