SAP and Arm64 version of Windows 11 with Prism emulator (Snapdragon X series)

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the new Snapdragon X series Windows 11 PCs. My expectation is that all new cloud solutions should work seamlessly through the browser, just like on x64 or x86 systems. However, for other tools such as SAP GUI, Java GUI, ADT (ABAP Development Tools), and even the OpenJDK for Windows on ARM64, the situation may be different. I understand that it's still early days, and some older solutions may never receive full support.

I'm also interested in how well the Prism emulator works for running SAP applications. I’m presuming that even if emulation adds a bit more than 20% processing overhead, it wouldn’t be too significant or even noticeable if everything functions as expected. The challenge is with the drivers and VPNs, which do not work under the Prism emulator.

Despite these concerns, there is already a substantial list of native software for Windows on ARM that’s available today. It will be interesting to see how the ecosystem continues to develop.

[Conclusion] After one week of using Windows 11 ARM-based laptop PC, no issues found. List of installed software as well as the list of x64 processes when everything is running at the same time, is below. I'm thrilled with this outcome.

SAP GUI for Windows 8 Final Release - 64bit, Patch Level: 9 Hotfix: 1
ABAP Development Tools for Eclipse3.44
NW Developer Studio 7.5 SP30
SAP PI Integration Builder tools (swing PI tools ESR and IB) 7.5

Hi Sven,

in regards to ABAP development tools for Eclipse: Do you know our ADT installation guide? It is our official document. It contains a section with the requirements.

Does the document helps you?

Kind regards,

Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang, I was curious about this topic, so I just started today with my third Surface device, which is now running on Windows Arm64. The VPN from the Microsoft Store works fine. I installed the latest 64-bit SAP GUI without any issues and also set up non-native Java with webstart ( javaws.exe, version 8 ) to run the PI/PO Swing tools. I couldn't get native OpenJava to work due to the missing webstart, and OpenWebStart didn't recognize the native one. Next, I'll proceed with ADT. So far, running x64 applications is working well. I can't comment on speed in detail, but everything seems much faster than on my other machines. Thanks for the ADT installation guide! On page 16, under "Microsoft Windows 10TM or higher," it might be helpful to specify x64, given that Arm64 is now in the mix. I'll check soon if the emulation works for the other tools I use daily. Thanks again!

OK, good luck.

Please let us know if you have further questions.
