S/4HANA on-premise extensibility using BTP -- is ABAP environment required?

We have S/4HANA on-premise and we're extending functionality using BTP platform.  There are multiple ways of extending functionality on the BTP platform.  Some options are using the ABAP environment, but so far there has been alternatives options.  We always chose the non-ABAP environment option just to avoid having to add the ABAP environment service to the BTP platform.   But is the incorrect choice?  Would we eventually need to implement the ABAP environment on BTP platform?

What extensibility can only be done in BTP using the ABAP environment?

Thanks,

Hi  Mel,

Please refer to the standard SAP guide to choose the right approach.

Hi @0012anirban,

Thanks for this doc.

From your experience, do you feel that any S/4HANA on-premise using BTP for extensibility would require BTP ABAP environment?

Thanks.

Hi Mel,

From a strict extensibility point of view i think most of the use cases can be catered with key user extensibility or by developing some custom logic using RAP.

However if you have to develop side by side extensions, automatically generated Fiori elements or freestyle Fiori apps then SAP BTP ABAP environment will be needed to be provisioned.

You can look at the tutorial https://developers.sap.com/tutorials/fiori-tools-rap-create-application..html to see how ABAP environment in BTP is used to generate the Fiori app and deploy to on-prem Fiori launchpad.
