Readiness Check Run for S/4HANA "FOUNDATION" System Upgrade to 2023

Hi All,

Need advise on SAP Readiness Check  run for upgrade to 2023 on-prem version of S/4HANA "FOUNDATION" only system. As per SAP Note# 3049197 it says that Readiness Check is only applicable for S/4HANA full stack systems but out-of-scope for S/4HANA Foundation systems.

So in that case-

Q1) Does it mean we do not need to do such a check at all for Foundation S4 systems w.r.t note 3049197 ?

Q2) Do we still need to do something "similar" to the readiness check for an Upgrade from a lower ABAP Foundation (say 1709 or 1809) to S/4HANA Foundation 2023 FPS01 version w.r.t note 3049197 ?

Q3) When SUM tool is run then for a S/4HANA Full stack system it will check for SI related items and blocks the Upgrade if those have not  resolved/decided prior to running of SUM, does it means similar is the case for S/4 Foundation systems as well when SUM is run ?

Q4) (Follow-on question to Q3), then instead of readiness check, do  we need still need to run SI checks outside of Readiness check for S4 Foundation upgrade, also do we need to check for  ATC Custom code  checks and are they mandatorily needed for S4 Foundation upgrade ?

15. Can I use SAP Readiness Check for SAP S/4HANA upgrades to evaluate an SAP S/4HANA Foundation environment?

SAP Readiness Check for SAP S/4HANA upgrades is designed to support full stack SAP S/4HANA systems. The analysis of SAP S/4HANA Foundation systems used for deploying SAP HANA-only Add-Ons is out of scope.

Hi Ashish,

To date, there are no applicable simplification items for SAP S/4HANA Foundation. As a result, there is no SAP Readiness Check for SAP S/4HANA Foundation. Additionally, as there are no applicable simplification items, Software Update Manager (SUM) does not perform the precheck activities you have observed with a full-stack SAP S/4HANA system. In preparation for an SAP S/4HANA Foundation upgrade, we recommend reviewing the applicable guides and SAP Notes for SUM, the target SAP S/4HANA Foundation version, and the installed ABAP add-on instance.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for your valuable clarification on my query. So as I understood from your response, for S/4HANA Foundation Upgrade from lower releases - there is no requirement as such to check for SI checks / ATC checks / Readiness Checks runs (like otherwise we would have to do for a full stack S/4HANA upgrade).

We just need to follow the standard S/4HANA 2023 Upgrade Guide (the only guide we have as there is no separate guide for S/4HANA Foundation upgrade) and the SAP note SAP S/4HANA Foundation 2023: Release Information Note SAP Note 3306766. And that rest of the upgrade run (via SUM tool) for a S/4 Foundation system will be similar to Full stack S/4HANA upgrade.

Hi Ashish,

I need to clarify some things regarding your recent reply.

First, the ABAP Test Cockpit (ATC) is always recommended when an ABAP system contains custom code. However, you will need a more applicable check variant, as the S4HANA_READINESS_xxxx variants do not fit the SAP S/4HANA Foundation use case.

Secondly, there is no dedicated upgrade guide for SAP S/4HANA Foundation, as SAP S/4HANA Foundation is not allowed to be used as a standalone instance. You will need to refer to the upgrade guide for the installed ABAP add-on solution implemented in the system. A list of supported ABAP add-ons for SAP S/4HANA Foundation 2023 is available in SAP Note 3306766 - SAP S/4HANA FOUNDATION 2023: Release Information Note.

Lastly, in addition to the ABAP add-on guide and related SAP Notes, please review the applicable Software Update Manager (SUM) upgrade guide based on the version and support package version you select for your upgrade. Thank you for the response it is very helpful.

However, as you mentioned about ATC, could you please clarify about SI (Simplification Item check run) also whether its is needed for S/4HANA Foundation  (with Addon) system upgrade as pre-requisite activity  ?

S/4HANA Foundation 1809 have addons as SAP_CUAN and UICAN (Hybris marketing - Customer engagement Intelligence) , but as you mentioned did not find any addon specific guide available for this upgrade to S/4HANA 2023 Foundation (with hybris addons), could you please suggest here ?

I’m going to address your second question first. Software components SAP_CUAN and UICAN belong to SAP Marketing (formerly SAP Hybris Marketing). SAP Help Portal includes an upgrade guide for SAP Marketing. Here is a link to the online documentation for the latest release of SAP Marketing: SAP Marketing | SAP Help Portal. In addition, I recommend you review SAP Notes for SAP Marketing, including SAP Note 2469687 - Release strategy for the ABAP Add-on product SAP Marketing (SAP_CUAN + UICUAN).

Regarding your first question, there are no simplification items for SAP Marketing.

I recommend engaging your SAP account team or preferred implementation partner if you have further questions about this upgrade.
