Which OData implementation mechanism is recommended to choose between Gateway based OData versus CDS based OData?
RAP-based OData V4 is the way to go, see https://community.sap.com/topics/abap/rap.
RAP uses CDS and Gateway under the hood, so its both and much more.

Thanks Ralf. What are the demerits of Gateway OData over RAP based OData/CDS based OData?
RAP provides an increasing number of OData features out-of-the-box that you'd have to hand-craft with Gateway OData.
It's both easier and more future-proof to use RAP.
