Oracle upgrade with DataGuard

Hello,

We are preparing an upgrade of Oracle 12 to 19 for our SAP systems on Windows.
Our Prod system has a DR setup using Oracle DataGuard in ASYNC mode - PRIMARY on one host and PHYSICAL STANDBY (Mounted Standby) on another host.
We have gone through the "Upgrade to Oracle Database 19c Windows" guide, and SAP Note 2800001, but there is nothing covering how to upgrade Oracle with this scenario.
Can you please guide us to any SAP Notes or documents which cover the steps involved to upgrade Oracle where DataGuard is in place?

Thanks!

Hi Gareth,

True, that guide is suitable. Since at SAP we only use this solution as it is, there is no separate guide available from us. But here is a rough list of actions:

1. Install NEW Database Software on Standby host

2. Put Standby Database in recover mode under NEW Software

3. Install NEW Database Software in Primary host

4. Upgrade Primary Database to NEW DB Version

5. Post-Upgrade steps on Primary side .

6. Download SBP and copy to standby and primary

7. Disable Logshipping on Primary

8. Perform Patch Binary Installation on Standby Only

9. Complete Patch Installation/ Apply Patch to Primary database

10. Re-establish Data Guard environment at Primary database

11. Restart Redo og application on Standby database
