Hi SAP Team,

We would like to know what is the current SAP GUI version which SAP is having, for BSC currently we are using Version 740, we would like to know when SAP will be stop supporting this version.

If BSC would like to move to latest version which we are assuming 800, what would be the impact, does we need to perform any test in existing system once we migrated, and during migration to latest version does there will be any downtime.

Currently version 740 we see it was user friendly, does we will have same kind of look and feel and user friendly.

Please answer to above queries,, these we need to update to client.

Regards

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to SAP Community.

Indeed, according to SAP Note 147519 - "Maintenance strategy / deadlines for SAP GUI for Windows / SAP GUI for Java"  the 740 is no longer supported (Full support up to March 31st, 2018). Since then, several enhancement were carried out until SAP GUI 8.00 release.

For a functional perspective, the most relevant changes in SAP GUI 8.00 are outlined below:

SAP Note 3075781 - New and changed features in SAP GUI for Windows 8.00:

  • True 64bit version of SAP GUI for Windows

Up to release 7.70, SAP GUI for Windows was only available as a 32bit version with the exception being the 64bit versions of the automation controls (Logon Control, Table Factory Control, BAPI Control and Function Control). The 32bit version works well on 64bit operating systems and runs in the so-called “emulation” (see also https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/winprog64/running-32-bit-applications). However, this has a couple of drawbacks when it comes to memory utilization and integration with other 64bit processes. The most important limitation in this area was overcome when we started supporting 64bit Microsoft Office versions in SAP Desktop Office Integration.

Regardless of this, we keep getting requests for full 64bit support in SAP GUI for Windows and thus decided to implement, deliver, and support such a version. Therefore, as of SAP GUI for Windows 8.00, the SAP GUI delivery includes both a 32bit version and a 64bit version. You can decide which version to use (parallel usage of both versions on the same client PC is not possible).
The 64bit version offers an almost complete feature set with some differences to the 32bit version which are documented in SAP Note 3218166.

  • HTML Control based on Microsoft Edge / WebView 2
    • Full Browser Window when detaching URLs in the WebView2 Control (Edge as Browser Control)

In SAP GUI for Windows 7.70 the HTML Control based on WebView2 was introduced. Since this is a completely new control based on a new Microsoft component, until today several restrictions apply (see also SAP Note 2901278). One of the most important restrictions is when SAP GUI opens an external browser window through the HTML Control based on WebView2 only a browser tab appears (missing navigation, menu, and the options for grouping tabs). Thanks to a new browser extension for Microsoft Edge this limitation no longer applies as of SAP GUI for Windows 8.00 and the HTML Control based on Edge can open a fully working Edge browser window.

In addition to SAP GUI for Windows 8.00 you need to install a browser extension from the Microsoft Edge Add-Ons page (https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/sap-gui-connector-for-mic/mhpigfckgphoiifbehgajfbk...). See also SAP Note 3258944.

HTML Control: Edge based on Chromium (WebView2 Control) is now the default browser control

As of SAP GUI for Windows 8.00, the default setting for the browser control used to host HTML content inside SAP GUI for Windows is no longer the Internet Explorer control, but Edge based on Chromium (WebView2 Control). Due to the de-support of Internet Explorer by Microsoft (see also SAP Note 3058309) and the strong desire to move to a more modern browsing experience, this is a change which just reflects the facts and the expectation of most SAP GUI users. See SAP Note 2913405 for more information on browser controls in SAP GUI for Windows.

Yes, 7.40 was followed by 7.50, 7.60, 7.70 and now 8.00.

7.70 is out of support since April. 8.00 is already on Patchlevel 9.
