MDG uses ABAP. Accordingly, ABAP skills are a prerequisite for technical consulting. Check the MDG Learning Journey incl. training courses MDG 100 and 200.

Hi markus.ganser ,

I checked the link https://help.sap.com/learning-journeys/500364457a2610149194f4d6d354c9a6 but I could not find the right course in the learning hub. Is there any problem with my user?

Thanks,

Halis

Hi Markus,

Does this mean there is a technical and functional roles in MDG in that case? If yes, then Functional role will suite me.

For that functional role what are the prerequisites? Could you please help out.

Regards,

Rao.

Hi,

SAP MDG consultant is a functional and technical role.

Normally there is a MDG lead per functional area (BP, Material or Finance).

The MDG lead will have strong knowledge on the functional side and data model of the especific area and should also have a good unserstanding of the technical side.

A typical SAP MDG team could be:

1-MDG BP (Business partner) supplier and customer-Functional.

2-MDG MM Material-Functional.

3-MDG FI Finance-Functional.

4-SAP workflow (ideally each functional lead should have good knowledge.)

5-Abap developer.

6-UI Fiori developer.

7-MDG replication (ALE-Idoc,SOA (web services), RFC,File), ideally each finctional lead will know the replication details of the owner area.

8-PI middleware

9-SAP basis.

10-SAP IDM-Authorizations.

Based on your background in CRM, Ariba and SD. The ideal MDG data model for you may be MDG-BP (supplier and customer).

Going through the Learning hub material based on MDG learning journey to get MDG certification will give you the knowledge referred above.

Check the MDG certification details in these URLs, to know more the MDG areas and main subjects.

In the "Become competent" section of the Learning Journey, you'll find MDG 100 and MDG 200 which are relevant for consutants (both available as e-learning on Learning Hub). See also:

As a functional consultant with experience in CRM, SD, and Ariba, you already have a strong foundation in SAP, which will be beneficial as you move into MDG (Master Data Governance). While ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) is not strictly mandatory for functional MDG roles, having a basic understanding of key ABAP concepts can certainly enhance your ability to work effectively with the MDG module.

Here's why ABAP knowledge can be useful:

Customization and Enhancements: MDG often involves data governance processes where you may need to customize certain aspects of the system or integrate with other SAP modules. Knowing ABAP will help you understand how to configure or extend these functionalities.

Data Processing and Interfaces: MDG typically involves working with large sets of master data, and understanding how ABAP handles data processing, transformations, and integrations can improve your problem-solving abilities in complex scenarios.

Collaboration with Technical Teams: Even if you're not directly involved in ABAP development, having a basic understanding will help you communicate more effectively with technical teams (ABAP developers) during the implementation or troubleshooting stages.

What You Need to Focus On:

Key Areas in ABAP: As a functional consultant, you don't need to dive deeply into ABAP programming, but understanding key areas like user exits, BADI (Business Add-Ins), BAPIs (Business Application Programming Interfaces), and IDocs can be highly beneficial. These are commonly used in MDG for data validation, integration, and automation.

MDG-Specific Knowledge: Focus on mastering the functional aspects of MDG, such as the data models, governance workflows, and integration with other SAP modules. ABAP knowledge will complement this, but functional expertise in MDG is essential.

Hello Rao,

With regards to the training courses, MDG100 covers the functional aspect, and MDG200 concentrates on configuration aspects. You know, MDG is a multi-domain MDM solution. Which means that specific master data domain experise, that is, LoB knowledge is needed.

Best,

Markus
