It's ok to install the BO 4.1 client tools on the 4.1 BO Server?

I can remember that for previous version, this was not recommended. maybe I've only dreamed of..

Also, when 4.1 Client tools are installed on the BO 4.1 server, the install package will briefly stop the SIA and Tomcat during the install process so keep that in mind if you have users logged in the system.  Of course if you install the client tools on a separate server or PC the SIA and Tomcat aren't impacted, only when installed on the BO install server with matching SP/patch level.

Technically its fine if you take care of below points.

  • Both client and server components must be at the same patch level
  • A mismatch can lead to unexpected behaviour of both the client and the server.
  • To ensure that both are at the same patch level, any upgrade on the server machine will also require an upgrade of the client tools before the server is running again.
    • This results in a longer downtime window when patches are applied
  • The server machine should not be accessible to the user base (that may require client tools at all) as this can also compromise security.

Due to above reasons SAP recommends to install them on separate system.
