Issues creating Hana DB Free tier instance on Azure

Hi,
I am trying to create an instance of SAP Hana cloud in a sub account I set up in Azure west.
Added the entitlements:

  • hana-free
  • relational-data-lake-free
  • hana-cloud-connection-free
  • Tools

When I tried to create the instance the first time, after hitting create instance the error "Unable to connect" pops up.

Trying the process again results in "An error occurred while attempting to create an instance: provision could not be completed: Service broker error: Service broker hana-cloud failed with: You may only create one SAP HANA Cloud Free Tier instance"

So it appears something was created, but I cannot find it as no instance is displayed in either Hana Cloud Central.

I did delete the sub account, recreated again in Azure and tried again to the same effect.

After that, I did check the same process in AWS East (VA), and was able to instantiate a HANA instance there.
I have subsequently deleted that instance, as my purpose was to develop and test a POC on the west coast of the US.

Any idea of what is going on here? What I can do? Or more pointedly, what could I be doing wrong here?
Is Azure not supported for the Free tier for HANA? If not, oh well.

Hi @catlantis

As per https://help.sap.com/docs/hana-cloud/sap-hana-cloud-administration-guide/sap-hana-database-license?q...:

"For SAP HANA Cloud free tier, only 1 SAP HANA Cloud, SAP HANA database instance per global account per landscape is allowed."

ok trying again.. indeed Vitaliy. This occured on my first attempt. I have no reference to it on the instance manager. I have deleted the sub account. I have created a new on on AWS AND on Azure East.. Both of these resulted in me being able to create a hana instance. Creating again a new sub account (mind you with the other instances deleted) I still get the same message that you can have only one instance. I am not sure what us going on here. So.. it looks like there is a stuck ghost instance for me on azure (west). Again I repeat, there is NO listed instances, the first time I ran I got a lost connection.. then the message you cannot have more than one (yes, we all know that).. .deleting all instances of hana tools and then sub account makes no difference.. I cannot get a hana instance running on azure west. Thoughts?

The (newer) multienvironment SAP HANA Cloud Central shows only SAP HANA instance of one subaccount. The restriction applies to the global account to my understanding.
Are you sure there is no free tier HANA DB instance in another subaccount?
You may want to check the "Costs and Usage" area in the Global Account overview in BTP Cockpit and filter for SAP HANA Cloud whether there is already another HANA DB instance. You should also see in the Entitlements area in your subaccount, whether there is an available unit for the free plan of SAP HANA Cloud.

Hi Alexander, (sorry for the formatting, have not figured out how to work the enter button on this forum)... Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, there is usage listed, but the sub account has been deleted and the copy on the items reads "This subaccount was deleted sometime within the last 12 months. It's still listed here because it has registered usage during this period. Its usage was last reported in September 2024. Because the subaccount no longer exists, we cannot display its metadata, such as its path or labels." I think that lost connection message I received on the first invocation somehow orphaned the instance... I was also hoping some weekend clean up job might rectify this... but when I created a new sub account (I only have had one at a time) I still get the message there can only be one! Lol.. What ever is running and associated to azure(west), I cannot get to... either in multi-env or cf. BTW, entitlements for the free tier are listed and assigned. what is weird is I can create and destroy the free tier hana in Azure (east)... Anyway, not sure what to do here aside from waiting the time period when SAP will destroy the instance due to inactivity.
