isql slow to respond to syntax errors

I have noticed when i use isql, if i make a syntax error, sometimes it can take what feels like 10 secs, before I can a response back saying syntax error.

The same queries via the php client library is instant, which to me, means isql is doing something else, possibly debugging etc

Is there anyway to turn that off, and speed it up?
