Hi experts,
We run our 7 application servers with 21 SAP dialog instances. My colleague find one application servers is weird(OS is running, SAP is running fine but it just can't remote login and it can't login even in the console because it will hang in Windows login process). However, if you press power off and power on, it can login and operate normal for a few days maybe.
Anyway, my colleague reinstall this application server and run windows updates to the latest patch. Because windows OS patch is different with the others, we always get "There are different versions of ODBC32.dll in use".
Note: ODBC32.dll depends on OS patch level, not SQL server native client version.
We run our SAP system with this error messages for a long time and there is no problem at all. My question is: It should be fine with "There are different versions of ODBC32.dll in use" if you have different OS patch version is your system. Why does SAP shows this error messages if it is fine. Is there any notes mentioned that use different ODBC32.dll version will cause any trouble in SAP system?
Request clarification before answering.
Yes, I have read that note and I have spend a lot of time to identify the source of the problem. I ask Microsoft in MSDN and they tell me it depends on OS patch level. I took one or two weeks to test it and I confirm that is correct.
I know it is best practice but my company always wants to minimize unplanned and planned downtime. So we keep the system with that status for a long time, probably more than 6 months. I ask this question again because we are going to apply Windows Server 2016(November 2019 cumulative updates) and Windows Server 2012(November 2019 cumulative updates). We plan to go one server at a time so this error messages will still keep going on.
Okay, according to my previous experience, nothing will go wrong, correct? I just want to confirm with SAP, I can totally ignore that error message and go to run windows update one application server each time, correct? No negative effects?

Hi Dennis,
Why does SAP shows this error messages if it is fine?
Because SAP installation only checks if the OS version where you are going to install meets its prerequisites, for example Windows Server 2012 R2.
Yogesh provide you the right SAP notes
The recommendation is to have all applications servers with the same OS and patch level version.

Hello Dennis Lee,
To find your answer please check SAP note below..
1588547 - Setup Check: There are different versions of <filename> in use
As per SAP :
If the versions differ on one or more servers please apply the most recent service pack for the SQL Server installation on the database server and the most recent service pack for the SQL Server Client on all application servers as described in SAP Note 62988.
Thank you
Yogesh
