How to use the Libraries effectively in SAP Cloud ALM?

Dear SAP Cloud ALM Community,

I'm a big fan of using things properly. I was very curious when I saw in today's release notes a mention about libraries, and the possibility of assigning test cases to libraries.

  1. I was a bit disappointed I had never heard about such thing as "Libraries", even if I went through all the available SAP Cloud ALM trainings.
  2. The next point which is a bit strange for me, I can't find the Libraries app anywhere when I look into the Implementations section, or Operations, or whatever. I can only find it, when I specifically search for it on the search bar. Why?

Now, please help me. I went through the available documentation on Libraries - Library Management | SAP Help Portal

I have no idea how to assign test cases to a Library element. And I have no idea if this Library element could be reused among projects. This would be a great way to reuse test cases, as the concept of "Library" is typically to have something which can be reused to improve efficiency (like dlls?).

Thanks so much,
Bruno

Dear Bruno,

Thank you for your feedback regarding libraries in SAP Cloud ALM! It’s great to see interest in making the best use of the available functionality, and I’d be happy to clarify some of your points.

1. The Current State of Libraries in SAP Cloud ALM

We are starting with a very basic concept of libraries in SAP Cloud ALM. The initial focus is a minimal viable product to support the Selective Data Transfer (SDT) from SAP Solution Manager and lay the foundation for reusable elements in Cloud ALM. Since this is an evolving feature, additional functionality, best practices, and enhanced documentation will be provided as we extend the capabilities.

2. Finding the Libraries App

Currently, the Libraries application is not prominently featured (due to point 1) in the standard navigation of the Implementation sections. However, it can be accessed via the search bar in the SAP Cloud ALM Launchpad. This will be improved as we enhance the user experience and refine the integration of libraries across Cloud ALM functionalities.
We recognize also the need for general more guidance on Cloud ALM integration and will provide more structured documentation soon.

3. Reusing Library Elements Across Projects

At this stage, library elements serve as centralized, reusable elements with a focus on system groups (landscape) rather than projects. Your suggestion of adding a library element to a project while preserving its associated documents, test cases, and related elements aligns well with our roadmap. We aim to enable broader reuse and improve integration with other Cloud ALM functionalities in future updates.

4. Next Steps and Future Enhancements

We appreciate your insights, and as more functionalities become available, we will publish best practice guides and improved UI/UX enhancements to make the process more intuitive. We are also working on further enhancing relations and dependencies, ensuring that library elements can be fully leveraged across implementation.

For now, we encourage you to keep exploring and sharing your feedback—it helps shape the evolution of Cloud ALM to better meet user needs.

P.S. There is a Customer Council Call for Libraries soon

As long as it aligns with my responsibilities at work, you can count on it ðŸ˜Š

Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Cheers and see you in the council call.

Hey Bruno, why wouldn't I use a Library for my RICEFW Catalog? I may develop a report today for A that needs a minor change for B, and I want to leverage A to create B, then version where A is use to use B, etc. Seems LIbraries are more robust for this than using a Requirement. your thoughts?

Hi @lschenk, that was a bit too abstract for me. What I want is something that can be reused between projects, such as test cases. I'm not really sure what you are talking about so I don't think I can offer an opinion. Could you be less abstract?
