How to use OpenTelemetry for SAP Cloud Foundry / Cloud ALM

Hello Experts,

I urgently need your help. We want to monitor our Cloud Foundry environment using Cloud ALM. I found the following link: https://support.sap.com/en/alm/sap-cloud-alm/operations/expert-portal/health-monitoring/health-monit...

Initially, I only followed the listed steps and skipped the topics related to OpenTelemetry.

Here are the steps I have taken:

  1. Inserted the destination.
  2. Created a service key in the CALM subaccount.
  3. Set up the Alert Notification Service in the CF subaccount.
  4. Added the Cloud Foundry subaccount to the scope selection.
  5. Activated monitoring.

Unfortunately, the connection hasn't worked yet. No data is being displayed in Cloud ALM. I then came across the prerequisites and the topic of OpenTelemetry. To access the environment, OpenTelemetry needs to be integrated into the application. I created a test Node.js app for this purpose.

Now, if I want to use the Health Monitor from Cloud ALM, what exactly do I need to adjust? Can someone help me with this? I'm trying to follow this page, but I'm finding it difficult to understand... https://support.sap.com/en/alm/sap-cloud-alm/operations/expert-portal/data-collection-infrastructure...

Thank you very much and best regards,

BarcDe

Hello BarcDe,

I am doing a Proof of Concept to explore OpenTelemetry of SAP Cloud ALM for BTP Cloud Foundry environment, for example, to monitor custom application deployed on it.

I reached to the same SAP Documentation and facing same issue as you. Do not understand what exactly is to be done. I have a custom sample CAPM based application deployed on my Cloud Foundry Subaccount, but this steps mentioned here are too vague to follow.

https://support.sap.com/en/alm/sap-cloud-alm/operations/expert-portal/data-collection-infrastructure...

I have another question open here on community.sap.com:

https://community.sap.com/t5/technology-blogs-by-members/doing-a-proof-of-concept-for-btp-applicatio...

From your question, I realised some other steps which were not documented, at least I did not find it.

Would it be possible for you to share stepwise procedure which you described?

  1. Inserted the destination.
  2. Created a service key in the CALM subaccount.
  3. Set up the Alert Notification Service in the CF subaccount.
  4. Added the Cloud Foundry subaccount to the scope selection.
  5. Activated monitoring.

Warm regards,

Amey
