Hi,
for a more detailed user trace SAP is offering Solution Manager Diagnostics (SMD, https://service.sap.com/diagnostics). With this tool you can trace a user session (browser <-> network <-> portal <-> backend) and take a look at the response time of every component involved, like:
- SQL commands executed
- Servlets involved
- real time error analysis
- backend calls
- etc.

portal activity report iview will help you in monitoring the users.
like how many users are currently logged in, you can also monitor the the users who visted particular page or iview in a given period of time.
Create a iview based on the portl activity report iview and check the available options.
