Hi SAP,

Our SAP IQ DB size is high, and backup is taking approximately 12 hours to complete.
Could you please let us know how we can optimize the backup so that the backup time will get reduced.

I advise (general recommendations)

  • Review you backup strategy: Eg. use less full backup and more increment backups

  • Perform full backup during low activity (if possible) and increase max threads for the user performing the full backup.

You may also want to consider migrating to SAP HANA Cloud, Data Lake Relational ("HDLRE") which is the cloud native version of SAP IQ. One of the features of HDLRE is that the dbspaces and dbfiles are stored using cloud object storage with each database page being stored as a separate object. This storage architecture allows HDLRE to take advantage of the object store mechanism of "copy on write" to back up each page any time it is modified.

HDLRE still needs to back up the catalogue database on a schedule using a combination of full, incremental, and incremental since full backups at 3 hour intervals. However, the time required to run a "full" database backup for HDLRE is only the time needed to backup the catalogue database which is maybe a few minutes and is no longer dependent on the total size of the HDLRE database.
