How to maintain documentation for data elements on Cloud ERP / Public Cloud?

Hi community,

am I right that there is currently no option to maintain the documentation of a data element (a custom data element) on public cloud?

I mean the long text description/documentation where you can describe the usage of a data element in a long text format.

The reason why I would like to use that, is that I think if I could maintain that documentation, that the help content would be displayed accordingly in custom build Fiori Elements applications. Like it is done for standard data elements which have a documentation. I'm talking about the function on the Public Cloud launchpad when you press F1 in an application or on the question mark button on the top right. SAP Companion which is part of SAP Enable Now. I know that this product will be replaced with SAP WalkMe. But anyway, it would be great to have an option to maintain the long text documentation of custom data elements.

Even if the maintenance of such would be cumbersome (e.g. only creatable by creating a custom class which is creating the text - like it used to be for object like Application Job Catalog entries, before SAP provided UIs for this in Eclipse ADT), I would just love to be able to provide more information on a data element being used in SAP Companion automatically.

Any information on this would be very helpful.

Thank you
Daniel

Hello Daniel,

Data element long texts are displayed by default in UI5 (Fiori) apps in SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud Edition, regardless of type (standard or custom).

To create data element long texts, run transaction SE11 in the relevant ABAP backend, search for a data element, edit it, click Documentation, enter your text, save and release your changes:

The texts will then be displayed in the SAP Companion Help Panel and on the app UI when you click the question mark next to a field. This is also supported in WalkMe.

Please note that you can already check your texts before releasing your transport request by entering the app ID in the transaction field in the backend:

Hope this answers your question.

Best regards,

Francesco

Hi Francesco,

thanks for your reply and the detailed description.

As far as I know, it is not possible to access SAP GUI on public cloud systems. Am I wrong? I think the only option to connect to a public cloud system is through Eclipse ADT. And there I am not able to start transactions like SE11. Or is there a workaround for this?

Thank you Daniel

Hello Daniel, thank you for providing more context. This Help Portal page provides extensive information about the environment you need to set up in the context of extensibility: https://help.sap.com/docs/ABAP_DEVELOPMENT_TOOLS_FOR_ECLIPSE. These blogs may help you, too: https://community.sap.com/t5/enterprise-resource-planning-blog-posts-by-sap/sap-s-4hana-cloud-key-us... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1a4TfVQaZg Best regards, Francesco

Hi Francesco,

thanks for the provided urls.

I've already setup Eclipse for the public cloud system.
Unfortunately the links you provided don't explain how you could maintain documentations for data elements. The youtube video shows how to open a data element with SAP GUI in SE11. But this is the problem I have: I am not able to do that on a public cloud system.

So the issue is still the same as stated in the initial question: Am I right, that currently there is no option to maintain the documentation of a data element on S4HC?
If there is not, it would be great if you could think about this for a the future roadmap. With this it would be possible to integrate custom build applications seamlessly in a sense of provided help documentation.

Thank you
Daniel
