I would recommend that you set up a light test scenario to learn. For example, reading in a flat file and outputting an Idoc. If that works, you can build in a mapping and try out the individual functions yourself. This is the way you will learn the most. There are many examples of the individual functions on the internet if you need help. The topic of contexts is also extremely important, and you should really understand it well.
